Agnes Bakery

Brand Identity, Packaging, Website, Art Direction

What do you do when a pandemic stops your restaurant from opening? You turn the kitchen into a bakery. Agnes began selling bread, pastries and takeaway wine from its Agnes Street frontage — a temporary idea that quickly became a destination of its own.

Agnes Restaurant was preparing to open in Fortitude Valley when dining rooms across the city were forced to close. With the kitchen ready and takeaway one of the few ways to continue trading, the Anyday team adapted. The chefs began baking from the restaurant, selling pastries, bread and wine through a small pop-up on Agnes Street.

The identity was created quickly, but never intended to feel temporary. It needed to carry the warmth and craft of the restaurant while establishing a simpler, more immediate expression of its own.

The response was immediate. Customers began arriving from 5:30am, forming queues along Agnes Street before the bakery opened. On some mornings, everything sold within an hour. At a time when daily rituals had become uncertain, the bakery offered something simple and tangible: freshly baked food, a familiar exchange and a reason to leave the house.

The visual identity extended the character of Agnes into a more everyday setting.

A restrained Bordeaux palette, simple typography and tactile packaging created a system that felt warm, direct and quietly established. The design allowed the food and the people behind it to remain at the centre. Rather than presenting itself as a novelty, Agnes Bakery felt as though it had always belonged on the street.

What began as a practical response to the pandemic revealed an appetite for something more permanent. The success of the pop-up led to the creation of a dedicated Agnes Bakery — carrying forward the craft, generosity and community that had formed around those first early mornings. Born from interruption, the bakery became a lasting part of the Agnes story.

Agnes Bakery began as a temporary response to lockdown, when a restaurant ready to open could not. What started with bread, pastries and takeaway wine quickly became a destination of its own, leading to a permanent bakery shaped by craft, community and the character of Agnes Street.
